Lyrics

My Help (Psalm 121)

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

He will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
He will keep your going out
and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

He will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
He will keep your going out
and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

(My child, please know that I’m your keeper)
(My child, I’m your shade on your right hand)
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

O Lord, You are my keeper;
O Lord, You’re my shade on my right hand.
The sun shall not strike me by day,
nor the moon by night.

You will keep me from all evil;
You will keep my life.
You will keep my going out
and my coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

O Lord! You are my keeper
The sun shall not strike me by day,
nor the moon by night
You’re the keeper of my life
Ooo… and my coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
From this time forth and forevermore.
From this time forth and forevermore.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

About

Based on Psalm 121

Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth.

My Help” is an almost word-for-word rendition of the English Standard Version (ESV) of Psalm 121. God is our help, not only in tough and trying times, but at all times. This is especially true for those who seek to walk this discipleship road, knowing that God’s grace is needed every step of the way… and in doing so, we get a deeper realisation of His faithfulness that endures through all generations.

This song was penned in May 2012. It had been quite a while since I’d written any new songs. I was in a season of considerable stress, having to spread myself between the daily trips to the hospital to visit my dad, my work, spending time with my dear wife, ministry, amidst other things.

Interestingly, the inspiration for this song didn’t come about from what I was going through.

I was on my way home one night in May 2012 after a dear sister in Christ’s album launch. She has this beautiful, beautiful song written after Psalm 91 that kept ringing in my head. I had been thinking about writing a song to encourage a new friend from Hong Kong that I had made over the internet who was suffering from acute leukemia. One of my favourite Psalms, Psalm 121, came to my mind. I started looking through the English Standard Version of the Psalm as I travelled on the public bus back home. By the time I alighted, the bulk of the tune was more or less there. I reached home, picked up the guitar, worked out the chords and played it to Charmaine, the very first listener of the song. She looked at me and smiled, and I knew then that this is one song that I’d like to have produced.

Psalm 121:3-4
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

I got to know Janet, the sister in Christ from Hong Kong, through the most unexpected of ways. She was introduced to me through a friend from Hong Kong, Alan, who flew into Singapore for a weekend to attend a spiritual healing workshop, which Charmaine and I attended as well. I hadn’t been very keen in attending the workshop and had actually missed a previous run before, but I eventually did so with her. It was over one of those breaks in between the sessions that Alan approached me and told me how he was ministered to by my songs, and how our divine meeting was, in his own words, rarer than striking the lottery.

He began telling me how a couple friend of his, on their trip to Singapore, sensed the Spirit’s leading and bought my album, “I’ve Decided“, from the local Christian book warehouse without even sampling the songs inside the album. They brought the album back to Hong Kong, played the album in their caregroup and the Holy Spirit ministered to the people there through the songs.

They subsequently introduced the album to Janet, who was at that time battling with acute leukemia. Through Alan, I was linked up with Janet and placed on her mailing list, where she would update her friends on her condition. I was glad that God had allowed my songs to be used to minister to her in her pain.

Your singing gave me peace during many restless nights. The soothing of your voice calmed me before my bone marrow biopsy. Your lyrics released my pain inside.

I, in turn, was encouraged many times upon reading her updates, how she was determined to fight on. I got the demo for the song done, and eventually got the song produced in September 2012 with the help of Jusuf, a dear brother in Christ from Indonesia who’s really gifted in music producing and arrangements. Janet heard the demo version in June 2013 and found that the song “cuts close to the heart”.

I did not get the chance to let Janet hear the complete version of the song. She passed on to be with the Lord on the 16th of August, 2012, at the age of 40.

Psalm 121:5-8
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

I remember I was at the airport with Charmaine on our way home from our holiday trip when I read the heart-sinking email notifying her friends of her demise. I had a mix of feelings – glad on one hand that the Lord had delivered her of her physical pains and that she is now with Him, but sad at the same time.

I had learnt so much from her ordeal even when I was going through my own in 2012. Interestingly, God used her life and this song inspired by her brave fight with cancer to minister to my own life’s situation. And I am hoping that He will use her story and this song to minister to you as well.

I have been given permission to append her very last letter, completed by her friend, here. May you be blessed by it, just as I have been. He is her help… He is my help… and He is yours, too.

In memory of Ms. Janet Huang (6 June 1972 – 16 August 2012), who fought the good fight and is now with the Lord.

Janet - My Help (Psalm 121)

Dear all,

This will be my last email to all of you because I am finally discharged forever and I am happily in the arms of my Heavenly Father.

After 126 nights at the hospital, 3 rounds of chemo, countless antibiotics, I was called home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2012. Though it seems like I have lost the battle to leukaemia, but death just marks the beginning to an eternal life in a better place. In the last 5 months, I had come to know the Lord and that was the greatest gift ever, I had received tremendous love and support from all of you, I had embraced each day with hope and joy; and I had faced each trial with courage and strength. Just as it is written in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith”. So, I consider myself a winner!! And now, the time has come for me to depart. I can finally stop battling and start resting.

Don’t be sad, my dear friends. I have gone to a place where God will wipe away every tear from my eyes; there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying or pain. I can sing and worship the Lord all day long (Galvin, I will be singing your songs…). Best of all, no more canned food!!! Queen J (for those of you who still remember the story I wrote) has left J Land and moved to a new paradise :)

To my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, I am going to start enjoying our Heavenly Home first and will await the day when we reunite again. Meanwhile, please help me reach out to my loved ones and comfort them.

I know all of you will be missing me loads… When you think of me, always think of my laughter, my jokes; and my faith in the One who loves me, who gave me the joy and peace to get through each day… Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Keep smiling and May the Lord be with you all.

Always,
Janet Huang
