"Be Bowled Over By The Love Of Christ!" - AMKYF

Many a time, I questioned my free thinker status. Why wasn't I a buddhist or a christian by birth? The only reason I can think of is that I'm given the divine choice to choose. I guess I'll stay put for the time being.

Embracing a religion has its advantages. You gain friends from different facets of the community. Take Jane for example, besides us, college friends[commonly termed school friends], she has a wider scope of church friends whom she has close relationships with (I assume). All these weekly gatherings and outings once a while makes you feel you're not alone in the world. Guess that's what they're driving at. I had a fun day bowling with the usual bunch[WELL... not really] - Kelv, Slim, Val, Mountain Goat and of course Jane, though she didn't play much. She would make a very nice hostess for any function.

Before the bowling session started, a song session was held in which we sang an untitled song (The Joy That I Had??) which I assumed was an original composition. The message it basically wanted to get through was that everything comes from self within, that the world owes you nothing and the world can't take anything away from you. Meaningful indeed, though the song lasted only a couple minutes with countless loops.

For the newcomers [henceforth, those who aren't in the Youth Fellowship], we were given a survey form to fill up and a self-made momento, a wooden photo frame. For mine, the illustration showed a shoal of fishes swimming. That seem really normal to me till Jane pointed out the meaning. It was, in a way, inspirational, that the fishes swam to the left while the norm usually swam to the right, signifying the daringness to change. That really made me look at the illustration in a totally different way.

The bowling portion was insignificant[apart from me topping the rest of the bunch in the first game... only]. Jane had to leave at six. We continued till six thirty and sneaked off before the prize giving ceremony. It was really evil of us to leave just like that, especially so as an announcement was made to ask people not to leave just when we were stepping out of the bowling centre. *SO EVIL*.

We boarded the mass rapid transit. Destination - Orchard, to eventually gobble down a Burger King's Mushroom Swiss Meal. Goatie had to leave a stop earlier in Newton, the reason being that he had another meeting back in the hostel. We circulated two speculations - that it was real and we wished he had a fun time with... hehehe and secondly, that he was just trying to evade the meal. Guess we'd sort of neglected him... I guess I'd done my best to talk to him... In fact, I guess I'm the one who talked to him the most!

Though it's just a small group outing, it's a really memorable one. Guess it'll go in as one of my most memorable days in 1999. Thanks Jane, Kelv, Slim, Val and Goatie. =)

National Day Celebrations took on a new meaning this year as I was a spectator no more. I was to be the lead singer who was unable to catch the speeding tune and as a result forget my lyrics. It was such an appalling moment for me as jeers started to echo through the hall while I searched my mind for the words. They came back just in time. I had this feeling the audience made neither heads nor tails of our song. My doubt was made certain when Xinzhi told me she could only hear my voice throughout the entire duration. The strumming of the guitars was muffled [and terribly fast, too fast for any song... reminded me of bullet train. Should have discussed the speed beforehand...were you nervous, Zack?], voices were unheard. If what Xinzhi said was true, the only thing that the audiences heard would only be my harmonizing voice, which meant that the main tune wasn't even projected to the crowd at all. Which means, the song must had sounded extremely awful. Brrr. Shiver along. Here's the instrumental version in MP3 format. Don't worry. No voices.

Nevertheless, I thank the song for nurturing our class ties. We formed a distinct batik human train and tunneled through the crowd singing along to community songs. We held hands and moved along to our National songs. The situation at the hall could be described as perfectly chaotic. It was helluva fun.

We proceeded to Market Place in Centrepoint for lunch under the recommendation of gourmet specialist Aaron. The food tasted really wonderful [under the dim lighting and the constant beating of the air conditioner], especially the muslim fried chicken, but I reckoned the price could have been a little bit down to earth. Most of us had to overshoot budget to get a decent meal out of the place. Nevertheless, it was still a cozy lunch with the class. I enjoyed it. [Aaron paid for my share as a birthday present in advance of nine months. Heh.]

Went home after that to work on ThinkQuest. Ten days to the deadline. I'm not fretting. I shan't dwell upon the details either. I'm going to complete it.

First Lady Mrs Ong Teng Cheong gave way to cancer. Funny how we never noticed her presence when she's around. Now I feel a sense of immense loss. Actually felt my heart sank whilst the interviews of people paying respect were being shown on television. The Indian mom on the verge on crying, the Hwa Chong Alumni member talking like he's sobbing, etc. Maybe Siow Lee Chin the renowned violist didn't know how to express herself well on screen, but her sinister smiles set me pondering if she's speaking from the bottom of her heart. Wondered how she could lock her wide grins in place when the subject matter was one of solemnity.

To think we actually laughed and speculated the idea of having a half day to go along with flags lowering to half the level. We must be insane. Or most probably too sad to remain sane. Either way, we laughed. That wasn't good. Detrimental to the upbringing of Singaporeans.

Few more days to National Day celebrations. Dampened spirits plague the nation. The song has to go on, we still need to perform. Let's win. Let's whip up some euphoria. Let's take on the stage by storm.

Once a while I feel a sense of satisfaction. ThinkQuested the whole day. Negligence of homework is unhealthy though, but till the 16th of August, I won't give a damn.

I'm still putting the guitar version of "Our Home" on loop.

I really believe in constant practice. I'm losing my touch. Terok English pays an uninvited visitation. I'm trying means and ways not to let it in. Ops. The door's broken. I need to keep up with my words. To do so, I shall enrich myself with Word Smart II. Let's await a better me (not mini me).

Glad the class's getting along fine. IRC more often. Dot one another even if you've got nothing to say.

I'm not supposed to write. It's 12:43am, 2nd August already. I already knew writing would cost me time during this tumultuous period. I should be sleeping now and waking into another ThinkQuesting day. Not to forget normal lessons in College.

[Gravitation Force = GMm/r2 where G is the gravitational constant 6.67 x 10-11...]

Ominous clouds shrouded the sky (must be, but I missed them) before the torrential rain fell upon the dusky streets. It was by far the biggest in the morning ever since the inception of this website. And oh, was it not cold in the bus... The tattooing on the roof top was audible even in the interior... which goes to show how ponderous the raindrops were.

FIY, I was late today, again, but this time it was deliberate. Heh. No attendance marking or flag raising as the class assembled at the swimming pool for swimming lesson. I had to rush in like a lunatic while the instructor lectured the rest on punctuality, how it would hinder the lessons' progress, how time would be wasted, etc. Perfect timing. Thank god I wasn't reprimanded. Humpf. The weird thing was, I was picked to demonstrate the front crawl. ME! The instructor must had regretted her decision after watching me swim full laps. I lacked the ability to propel, though I did pretty neat strokes. Yulp.

Felt so guilty. I gobbled down a drumstick. ARGHHH! SO OILY! SO FATTENING! SO DISGUSTING! I apologise for my uncultured mannerism. I take back my words. Yummy. =)

I did below my expectation for my Physics test. Structured questions were my pitfalls. I failed every part of that section. Miraculously, I did really well for Section A and C, which pulled me out of the pits. I have no choice but to aim for 200% for the Promos.

On the contrary, I did above my expectation for Section A of the F-Math Paper, though I still failed miserably. Hah. I expected to get a single digit score. But I got more than that, which gave me every reason to feel jubilant for a little while. Deep within me, though, I feel utterly ashamed of myself. I promise myself to practice ten problems from any topic each day. It should commence after the completion of today's entry. I hope. Well, I guess I'm one of those stronger ones who're immune to poor results. Let nature take its own course. It's no use being overly distressed. (Obviously, I wouldn't be writing so much if I am)

Tender Fresh has been officially regarded as our class's (or rather, IRCers, TKD kias, whatever) ideal irregular hangout[hideout?]. Hideously located on the third floor of Coronation Plaza (above Tai Zi, another favourite [expensive]hangout), it boasts its ever so yummilicious Lemon Chicken Rice. Decided to try something different for a change today and ordered the fish counterpart. It tasted equally well, but I guessed the auntie could have been more generous with the number of pieces of fish she gave. I was bestowed two puny pieces of batter fried fish while Slim, Dest and Psyclone received innumerous chucks of chicken. Oh well. The place possesses this uniquely tranquil atmosphere which allows us to chat till the cows come home and this was what we precisely did today. We didn't stop yakking till six in the evening. I had a plate full of melted ice with isolated strands of grass jelly floating about before me. Slim said it resembled moss. I said it resembled a gullible act. Ah well. I'm disproving the fact that people don't talk bad about themselves.

Sometimes you just have to realise when a person mouths something worth pondering about or sprouts nonsensical garbage. As for now, I belong to the later classification. The title for this entry is meant to be, ah, So as to let me digest some of the new words I learnt from my vocabulary list. Heh. Slow and steady is the way to achieve a whooping sense of euphoria eh. I'm beginning to feel the effects. *smile* *smile*. I do subscribe to meliorism though. The Best Is Yet To Be. HAH. Sounds familiar? =)

Sigh. Most of the student population will get to enjoy the intensity of the sun (which IS a good thing) at the National Stadium, cheering on the school track team in a bid to clinch the Boys Championship and a second or third placing for the Girls team. How I wish I can relive the days back in Chinese High. We would cheer none stop at the grandstand without fail every year. Opportunity knocks but (breathe in deeply) SIGH... I had to stay for the technical rehearsal for the National Day celebrations. Isn't it ironic, don't you think? Everyone is supposed to be at the Stadium and I yearn to be there, so that makes perfect. And this rehearsal has to come in. I wonder why the people in charge couldn't postpone it till a later date, like Thursday. Humpf. Obstinate mulls they shall be.

Well. There isn't the need for me to feel so bad. After all, I'll be enjoying myself at the stage crooning away. Heh. Just hope my sweat wouldn't drown my voice, the stage, the population, blah... Anyway, there'll be a group of us singing, so the pressure will be distributed equally among ourselves. Plus point spotted by Peilin - we'll be able to get back home much sooner than the rest at the Stadium! Cheers! Humpf. Guess I'll just check out the results on television when I get back home.

I have to admit I can't sing well.

Hwa Chong Memo Quiz : Comedy Night

Boisterous laughter filled the darkened Lecture Theatre. Loud thumping, jeering, booing. Sure. We were in for a good dose of hysterical bewilderment. What was meant to be a serious brand of know-your-school quiz turned out to be a major catastrophe. The ugly facet of Hwa Chong students was sadly and inevitably manifested, owing to the no-teacher-around atmosphere. I particularly didn't manage to enjoy the show. Having been forced to take part in the quiz, the contestants lacked the fervor and tried as much as possible to shun away from the dreadful microphones. Their mindset was to get the quiz on and over with as soon as possible. The result was, well, disastrous. Many of the questions weren't answered correctly. Yeah. Many called it fun. I don't. I could have spent the time more wisely doing ThinkQuest at home. Or revising for the F-Math test. Or reading another chapter of "The Hobbit". Or doing homework. Or hanging out somewhere with friends. I guess walking through the exhibits at Project's Day over at TCHS would have yielded more benefits than sitting through the Memo quiz.

Sigh... Impetuous people.

The organisations responsible weren't well prepared either. They should have gotten teachers to grace the event. Yeah. Precisely. The chaotic situation would have been suppressed. Participation should have been made voluntary. The contestants weren't well prepared at all. Rules weren't stated clearly at the beginning of the quiz. It was truly a case of situation gone awry. And there's this question which smacked me real hard: "Which ECA was a subset of ITS?". The entry of the word "previously" would be much appreciated, though I'll rather the question not to be asked at all. "Was" and "Is" didn't make much of a difference.

I really sympathised with Dom, who was innocently claimed by the no-teacher-around atmosphere. Dom, you don't deserve it. You know it. Just a reassurance, in case you feel awful. Nah, I don't think you would. By the looks of your new facelift (erm... I mean your homepage), guess you're getting out of your gloomy days. Heh. By the way, you sang pretty well. ;)

**********

Well. My only excuse for not writing the day before was that I was busily mugging for the Physics Test today. Ah. The MCQ was a breeze. Time won the race again though. I wasn't given enough time to think through the rest of the paper. Perhaps it's time to upgrade my wrecked brain. Too many storms it'd gone through I reckoned. Duh. I await the arrival of the F-Math test in trepidation.

Oh yeah... We've gotten into the finals for the National Day performance! Our song got through! YAY! 'Tis time to brush up the lyric and stuff.

Pardon me for my sloppy writing. Can't think. LAH.

Yeah. It has drained off every bit of enthusiasm in me. It forbids me to exhibit any tinge of interest I have for anything. The routine of monotonous trotting life is meant to be broken. Like I said. I've lost all energy. I'm in desperate need for rejuvenation.

Another day just passed. Nothing special in particular. 'Cept that I'd learnt a couple more new words at the GP lesson today. Yeah. GP Lesson's getting more interesting now that I realised. Mrs Scowcroft showed us this prize-winning letter by an RJC student about the banning of R(A) movies and asked for our comments. In the end, we concluded by exercising our right as a Hwa Chongian - by saying that the piece was inclined to the author's own biased viewpoints against R(A) films and that she mistook R(A) movies with X-rated movies, which display purely explicit nudity, not to mention the lack of plot and the altered manifestation of artistic values. Oh well. Mrs Scowcroft seemed to adopt a bias standpoint too. "RJC what. PUI!". The entire class rocked in laughter. Ah well. No offense of any sort.

And there's this stand-in PE teacher for Mr. Joe Lim. Her innocent look covered up her ill intentions. I had this feeling that she was trying to compete with the other PE teacher to see who would be the better tormentor. She made us do push ups for no reason as a welcome ritual. She made us do more as the other class dillydallied and merged with us. Next we had to do scissors jumps, roundhouse stand for five minutes, et cetera, et cetera. I have to admit the entire physical conditioning regime wasn't really tough, but that is not the point. Thought we could get away with games rather than exercising. S32 got to play Captain Ball. Why can't we? We can't expect things to get better when Mr. Joe Lim returns as out PE teacher next week. Can we? Humpf.

I really don't know. But there's this saint in me that bugs me to do my homework. I found myself getting more inclined with my homework, now that I've gotten interest mixed within the parchment and ink. Guess it's time to get back to my Further Math problems. Yeah. Got to study for the Physics test as well. It's time to cut down on my weekly online schedules. Hey. I'm contradicting myself.

Food for thought. I hate rumors.

I didn't mean not to talk to you. We just had nothing to talk about. As yet. We need some things in common to generate a working conversation. I'm sorry. In the meantime, I guess we'll have to stay with a couple of hi's and byes, as in my earlier entry, ""Hi... Bye... Smile?". Apologetically yours. Things will improve. Hope you'll agree with me.

I realised fatigue has gotten all over me, so much so that when I try to think about a poem to write, my mind blanks out. Ah well. Will wait till the juices crawl back. A million years perhaps. Can't you sense that I'm just kidding... ...

I'm beginning to hate morning assemblies.

I feel so stupid. I need a hole to burrow my head into. No, it wasn't fun to be the object of ridicule during the morning assembly. On a lighter note, maybe I brought as much amusement to the populace as a clown can bring. Duh. As such, I would like to apologise to Andy. Didn't know you were around. Liyun (or Qiyun... can't remember) told me that Shiyao told her that you weren't around. So that doesn't sum up to be my fault that I had to receive your prize on your behalf. Blame it on broken signals instead. I didn't volunteer myself anyway. I hate to be a victim. ARGH. Someone give me a hole.

Today's Qiao's birthday. He's nowhere to be found at this point of entry (I'm at the School Computer Laboratory, supposedly doing some research for my GP essay. Humpf. The class's ended anyway.). Got a little token for him. Hope he wouldn't look that disppointed when he unwraps the present. Guess I'll ask him to unwrap the present at home. Or I'll need another hole to borrow into. ARGH.

Heck. I don't wanna be a mole... Leavin' the Lab now.

Off to do my Further Math tutorials. A day not worth remembering. I sympathise with Qiao. This goes to show how "united" his class is. Ah well. Makes me feel so good to be in 99S31. =)

Cacophony brews up in the background
while reticence dominates the fore -
a juxtaposition of living peace and war.
Hey you, don't you dare unfurl a frown

Cause this ain't a poem
to be read at the podium
Just a frivolous attempt of mine
to make nonsensical things rhyme

Guess that does it. Ho ho ho.
(Eeks. Reminds me of the Milo ads. Or was it Holicks?? ARGH! Or was it Ovaltine?? Did I get the spellings right? ARGH! Why am I so paranoid today...)

Da. Da da da dum. Da. Da da da dum. Da da, Euuuu. Heh. An affinity to Fann Wong's songs wouldn't do me any good. Credit goes out to the composer/s. Ah. I'm forcing myself to lie. Indeed, Fann's vocal ability increased at least ten-fold, the way I see it. The catchy tunes entice me to play them over and over again. Fann haters out there, don't hate her too much alright? Compared to the rest of the TCS "singers" (Okay okay, I'll exclude dear Evelyn, cause I enjoy her songs as well. Heh.), Fann deserves a certain amount of credibility. Am I not wrong (perfect example of anti-summary skills. Duh.)? Luv Luv Luv...

He who paces sluggishly out of the Lecture Theatre after Double Math Test II depicts a born loser. Apparently, the questions were nothing but simple regurgitation from the tutorials. Being a born loser, this unrepentant fellow fails to listen to advice and finish all the tutorials, hence suffers tremendously under the constant beating of the cold air from the gargantuan air shaft hovering directly above his brain-fried container. He who fares badly has got nothing else to say about the issue. He who has got nothing to say anticipates the Physics Test next week. O'er his dead body he's going to do badly again, he mumbles unconsciously.

It appears that the song we sang for the audition sounded muffled, as commented by the teacher judging it. Ah. This shows disunity among ourselves then. How? There is no how. Either we get into the finals and we put our hearts and souls in it or we do not get into the finals and we let the song settle in the dust. The later realisation would be pretty cruel to our hard work eh? Close your eyes, look upon the shooting star and pray. If there is one. Either way, I think it would be cool to have it as our official CT song, changing the lyrics here and there. As a matter of fact, the lyrics fit in perfectly well! Hmmm... and maybe we can compose an English version of it as well. Hehe.

Humpf. Targeted deadline for completion of my ThinkQuest project is only two days away. I'm stuck with thirty percent of work done. I'll need a sudden burst of energy today to elevate the percentage by another twenty. Well. I definitely hope so. But I feel so haggard now. Haven't slept since twelve midnight. I'm ready to doze off anytime.

Shines upon
the break of dawn
Upon the lawn
Luscious jade springs
Web of life woven strings
River of soul sets the fringe
Island awakes thee
Where the air is free

YES. The series of General Paper presentations is finally over! Our team closed it with a big bang. You should have seen our jubilant faces when we received our presentation mark sheet! It may or may not be the highest among the rest of the class, but it certainly was above our expectation! We scored a hefty forty-three out of a possible fifty! Totalling up with the written report, our team scored seventy-five, just enough to savour the fringe of distinction! YAY! What a relief. Here's what Mrs Scowcroft commented on the whole presentation, "Fantastic and Fun. I enjoyed myself". An immediate entry into my book of memory. Blips and bloopers aside, our presentation was thoroughly a success.

The video didn't arouse much havoc laughter as expected, but nevermind. It induced chuckles and giggles at certain parts though, like Kelvin the clone being exterminated by a bomb (lump of newspaper) and Zacky the tortured one pacing sloppily away from the camera. The best thing was that Mrs Scowcroft laughed along. Heh.

Self evaluation: failed. Though the presentation was a success, I myself truthfully think that it was not due to my contributions. Acted like a piece of wood I guessed. Argh. Never had the talent anyway. Furthermore, my stage fright caused the team a few points. I read from the notes when it was my turn presenting. Luckily Jianqun asked me to memorise my part for the skit, which was quite a success as well (Blips here and there - Kelv forgot some parts and had to search his pocket for the script. Must have amused Mrs Scowcroft. Hehe.).

The Quiz session was one of the primary reasons for our results. We managed to forge a rapport with the floor and got everyone moving along. Guess the climax for the laughter breakout was when we bestowed the cai xin (lettuce) to Sing Eu as a prize for giving the correct answer. Everyone virtually laughed their heads off, including Mrs Scowcroft as well of course. The laughter generated filled the freezing computer lab with much warmth. This is definitely something worth remembering as part of my Junior College life.

Humpf. GP Presentation's over, but the Math test isn't. Hey... now that I realised... It's going to start in fourteen hours' time! My plan for the day is to sleep from right after I finish with this till the break of dawn (I'm not sure... but it should be twelve midnight) and then "perfume mug" like a xiao ding dong (literal meaning in English - lunatic) till the start of the test. I need to score!

I was contemplating for quite some time if I should write an entry for today. Reason simple as it is - I was dead beat. The whole GP team went over to Jianqun's house right after school (which was, right after the arduous workout along the boundaries of Hwa Chong) to finish up the GP presentation and rehearse for tomorrow's showdown. Glancing sideways at the clock, I reckoned I should be in bed. Math test coming up on Saturday and I find no time for it. The GP Project really tied everybody down. By the way, I'm cheating by writing the July 8th entry on July 9th. Heh.

Four wholesome days to Qiao's birthday. I wonder how much a price I can afford. Nevertheless, I'll try to get something worth remembering. It's the thought that counts, everyone says that.

Yeah. The video didn't seem pretty much interesting after laughing through so many times. Every time the video is rerun, our confidence level dropped by a considerable percentage. Hope all goes well afterwards. We spiced up our presentation with a funny skit completely churned out within fifteen minutes. Kudos to Zacky! Ah. Who can forget that evil laugh and those artificial bomb sound effect followed by a short pause and then a subtle but definitely audible "AHH". Heh. The first time we played it on the tape recorder, we laughed to the limit. Had to ask Jianqun not to repeat so as to let me catch my precious breathe.

I'm disintegrating in all facets. My studies, my health, my moral, et cetera, et cetera. De facto, a need for me to buck up is by no means a necessity. Keeping my optimism alive, I believe I can fly. Duh.

It's really getting very late. The time is 1:52am and my eyelids can't stand it anymore (Well, in normal circumstances, I would sit on them. But anyways). Guess I'll stop now.

Hi Kannan, so sorry for replying this late. I'm not quite sure about the rest, but St. Lukes generally takes care of patients well. When my mom was there, they rendered their services professionally and even helped her recover from a very bad state of bed sores. There's PT and OT available at the hospital as well. In fact, she'll be heading there for a few weeks this coming December as her caregiver returns home for a while.
